yes possible...spa 300-500 gallons vs pool 10,000 gallons or better...not a big factor with the chemicals here. most spas have a site in the plumbing to connect a garden hose and gravity drain the water out, turn off heater element so as not to burn it up when dry. never heard or backwashing a spa.
just replace the water every couple weeks or months depending on use.

I am not sure about the brand name, but check under the spa, where the acess door is. You will see the pump motor, and maybe on top of that will be the heating element with a control knob on it. If thats the case, turn the knob clockwise. There also may be a reset switch located somewhere on the heater as well. Just look around under there, you should find it somewhere.

When was the last time you emptied it out and cleaned it thoroughly? This is probably the best thing to do.
Excess skin, hair and body products, soap from and swimsuits, food or drink spilled in the water, animals, mould, fungus or algae growing in the water, all common causes, all need your hot tub to be drained to fix properly.
Good Luck

Don't you have a little test kit to make sure the chem balance is correct.
Check and clean filters.

No reason for it to run every hour. But you don't need to heat it either.
Draining it may cause problems with the filters and pipes.
It would be best to simply turn the temp down. If you are in an area prone to freezing you may want to keep an eye on it. Once a week check the water level and every other week do a chem check.
Leave it covered. If the pump is on a timer and not controled by the thermostat then see if you can reprogram it to once a day or two. If not, turn it off. Run it once in a while.

Go to the spa dealer or another reputable spa dealer and ask them how it would work. They would know a lot more about the model of the spa and whether or not it's safe.

Hot tubs are a perfect breeding ground for bacteria. Sodium Hypochlorite (bleach) is the best for disinfection.
Salt water destroys metal, stainless steel or plastic materials work best.

You could add a filtration system utilizing diatamatious earth and UV lights to lessen your dependance on chlorine.
I'm not sure that salt would help that much.
